Piltdown Man Hoax

In 1912, the scientist Charles Dawson is believed to have been the person to discover the Piltdown man. Charles Dawson discovered this while on a digging expedition and found a jaw bone that was ape like but had a human ware pattern. Arthur Keith was England leading anatomist. And that this proved his evolutionary theory that humans had big brains before they walked up right. Later scientists now know that the opposite is true. The additional finds he discovered shut down anyone that challenged this discovery of human fossils. No other Piltdown men were discovered Dawson Passed. In 1949 showed that the remains were very young about 100,000 years old. When the teeth were looked at it seems that the teeth were filled down because of the scratch mark it had. The Jaw bone dated back about less than 100 years. The jaw came from a female orangutan, the pieces of the jaw that were broken seemed to be perfectly broken so that the jaw could resemble to a human jaw. Scientists were shocked when they discovered that this was forged.

Some human faults that come into play would include; National pride, self-interest with wanting the fame and glory of “discovering” something that never existed.

The positive aspect of the scientific process that was responsible for the revealing of the fraud was disbelief and curiosity. So in 1949 and 1953 there were different test to see how old these remains were. These test were a fluorine test and then they launch the first full scale analysis with better dating methods. Also when looking under the microscope they realized that the teeth were filed down because of the deep scratch marks in the teeth. The jaw was from an orangutan.

I don’t think the human factor could not be removed because we need human curiosity to discovery new information. I think that there should be more people doing the discoveries and if possible constant surveillance on the scientist because of the fraud that could happen. But with new technology forging a discovery will be a lot harder than it was before.

I think that there should be more information and evidence found about a discovery being claimed.  Because anyone can falsify information but if a large number of test are being done or fossils being found than I would be able to believe a claim. Other than that you can’t trust someone’s word because of over exagerations and lies.

  1. I think it was really interesting how you chose national-pride as one of the human faults. I agree with this fault because the men were trying to make an advancement for science and their country so this fault shows that whoever was the mastermind of the hoax may of not only had his/her own best interest at heart. I also agree with you that the human factor couldn't be removed from science. Our ideas and curiosity are what make us strive to learn and research new things. Also, you make a good point that with the technology advances we have now, it would be very difficult for someone to forge a discovery. I personally tend to embellish a lot of my stories and my family always coins me as a huge exaggerator so I agree that you can never trust someones word in a scientific case like this, tests must be done to prove what is true or false.Great Job! :)

  2. I too like the point you made about national pride! I also believe much of the hype and excitement of this supposed find, had been detrimental in the actual research of these fossils. In research you can never assume any aspect of your studies!

I did not think about the fact that without human curiosity, there would be no hypotheses to study or experiment. However, as far as the research aspect of science, technology can do much of the work of falsification and general authenticity of findings. Therefore, this eliminates much of the human factor.

  3. I also agree that the shame of one man should not cloud the true scientific community. There are may truthful and devoted scientists that remain. There tenacity and sense of responsibility to there community should not be forgotten.

  4. Very good summary of the situation, particularly pulling in the fact that this supported the idea that humans developed larger brains before bipedalism, which we now know to be false.

You list human faults but don't explain or describe them. What do you mean by "national pride". Nothing in your post offers any explanation for this.

I agree with your reference to curiosity when talking about positive aspects and how you tied this in the issue of the human factor. Can you think of any positive aspects of the process of science itself (not human traits) that is revealed in this event?

  5. Thank you all for the feed back. i greatly appreciate it.

    Professor,
Thank you for your feedback as well i had the explanations for the human faults but never wrote them i will next time.
    Thank you once again
